What is Naloxone/Narcan?
Naloxone is an opioid antagonist— It binds to opioid receptors in the brain and can reverse and block the effects of opioids. Naloxone is temporary and its effects last approximately 45 to 90 minutes. That’s why it is imperative to call 911 immediately when witnessing an opioid overdose.
Does Naloxone/Narcan have side effects?
Naloxone can (but does not always) cause withdrawal symptoms or unpleasant physical reactions, in people who are physically dependent on opioids. Withdrawal symptoms may include fever, anxiety, irritability, rapid heart rate, sweating, nausea, vomiting, and tremors.
What are the signs of an opioid overdose
*drowsiness * very small pupils
slow or shallow breathing * vomiting
*an inability to speak * faint heartbeat
limp arms and legs *pale skin
*blue/ gray lips and fingernails
Kind Words Mean So Much
“Thanks in part to Gail’s quick work Portland Public Schools is in a place to move forward quickly with having Naloxone (Narcan) at all buildings by next fall.”

The work that Need 4 Narcan does is vital, and I am grateful that they were able to educate students at my school about the fentanyl crisis and provide hands-on narcan training. When they presented at our Wellness Fair, their session was one of our most popular and every attendee I spoke to felt like they had learned something. Their presentation later in the school year was extremely moving, as the stories shared by members of their organization highlighted the ongoing threat of the fentanyl crisis, the importance of narcan accessibility, and the positive impact that N4N has had on people’s lives. The N4N team, especially Gail, Kim, Kyle, and Kristin were so kind and clearly passionate about the work that they do.

Lincoln High School felt so incredibly blessed to work with and learn from Gail, Kim and the Need 4 Narcan team over the past school year. As the years progress we see an increasing need for fentanyl education and resources but we often don’t know where to find it. Need 4 Narcan was the best recourse that the Wellness team stumbled upon. Not only are they incredible people who care so much about changing lives and keeping people safe, but they are so educated on the dangers of overdose and fentanyl. Teenagers these days are (sadly) extremely likely to witness or be apart of an overdose which is why organizations like N4N can truly change lives. With each presentation and narcan kit, a persons life could be saved and they could be given a second chance at life. I feel so blessed that I have gotten to work with Need 4 Narcan and I think that the work they do is vital.

When we receive a letter of love and appreciation- our hearts are deeply touched. Gail-Strobehn-Simmons
. My work with Gail on the expansion of Narcan availability in schools across Oregon, provided me with insight into her passion and dedicated network of concerned and committed individuals throughout the state. She has worked tirelessly to break down barriers and ensure that Narcan is available when needed in case of a potential opioid overdose in multiple settings.

To whom it may concern,
My name is Linda Wabs and with a few other Clackamas County neighbors, we have been doing outreach work in Clackamas County and on the border of SE Portland. Our main location is the Milwaukie Bottle Drop. Our folks have named us “The BottleDrop Ladies”. We are out several nights a week for a few hours bringing much needed supplies, aid, resources, and food to our folks that live in the margins, either unsheltered, in a vehicle, in a tent or RV or in poverty in a residence.
I wanted to send a letter to share how much Gail has helped us.
I met Gail through her husband Alans department at work. When he heard about the outreach work, we were buying supplies for, he said, you must meet my wife. I called her and she immediately shared with me the work she is doing in Clackamas County on overdose prevention and that she wanted to connect.
It didn’t take long before Gail and I became friends! She has spent hours and hours with us, connecting with our folks in need. She takes her times and gets to know people, one on one. She hears their stories and shares her own. She truly cares!
Gail never comes to BottleDrop empty handed. She usually has a carload of supplies! Water, socks, clothes, hot chocolate, coffee, wound care, hygiene kits and, of course, Narcan.
Gail openly embraces OUR community literally with hugs!
She talks to everyone she meets about the importance of always carrying Narcan with them. She will explain how to use it too. People feel very at ease around her as she has that caring mom energy.
If there are any questions you have or need more from me, please don’t hesitate to contact me.
Thank you!

Recommendation on behalf of Need 4 Narcan 8/22/24
My name is Kendra and I teach high school health at an alternative school for Portland Public Schools. Gail and her crew at Need 4 Narcan came out to one of my campuses to give a clinic on fentanyl overdose and Narcan. The clinic was amazing and covered what fentanyl is, signs of an overdose, Narcan use, CPR and more.
My students come from many different backgrounds and many have a lot of trauma and PTSD due to that. They have been through multiple schools and have had unpleasant to awful experiences in the past. This makes it hard for
them to trust people they do not know well. With that being said Gail and her team were amazing, my students were actively engaged with questions and the physical activities of CPR and building their individual Narcan kits.
I could not recommend what they do more as last year one of our campuses had a student overdose and the Narcan that brought them back was from Need 4 Narcan. I will be reaching out to them again this year for another clinic or more if available. As my students really appreciated the info, kit and the way it was delivered.
Thank you for supporting what they do. Feel free to contact me with any questions at all.
